Many people have literally abandoned any personal accountability for their wellbeing.
A recent article in the news paper stated that Quebec doctors are being offered $100 for every patient they put on cholesterol-lowering drugs. Click here for the full article. The key question that arises from this information is; what kind of influence is the pharmaceutical industry having on how our health is being managed by our medical institutions? My response to this question is; if you don't participate in managing your own health, you leave yourself vulnerable to all sorts of questionable intentions by those who seek to profit on your pain.

The best way to resolve the debate as to how much any institution is infringing on our lives, is to limit our interaction with them as much as possible. Sure we need to have a close relationship with our doctor, and seek attention when necessary. But many people have literally abandoned any personal accountability for their wellbeing, and leave all managing of their health to pills and invasive interventions. Using big pharma as our example; if we as a society would just practice healthier lifestyles, these companies would have less and less opportunity to exercise their business objectives on us.
Issues, such as undesirable marketing projects from pharmaceutical companies, don't bring to question so much their moral integrity. For me, it's more of a reflection of how we've become complacent in how we look after ourselves, and when we run into problems, we look to these institutions to take care of us. This has gotten so out of hand because we're not exercising the least bit of accountability for our health. Preventable conditions, such as high cholesterol, obesity, heart disease, basic muscle pains, and headaches; are being treated with medications as the first choice of intervention. These conditions, and many others, are related to poor lifestyle. Simply changing some of our food choices, and becoming more active; is all it takes to get some of these illnesses under control.
We can't really portray the pharmaceutical companies as all bad either. They have contributed to great advancements that have changed the lives of millions of people. It's important to remember that they are a business that is simply willing to provide a product for profit, if there's a need for it. If people can't perform the most basic responsibility of taking care of those aspects of life that revolve around choices, then those individuals are significantly putting themselves at higher risk of others managing their health for them.
